Looking after your furniture properly and preventing any harm is the key to keep its original colour and finish.

All light scratches and dents will happen to the wax layer, not the wood itself. Use a good high quality wax and apply sparingly with a clean lint-free cloth, and buff the area until the surface looks consistent and beautiful. Beeswax is definitely the best. Bare in mind that contrary to common knowledge, wax should build up, but the key is to buff the area evenly so that the wax builds up clear to create a protective layer that will bring shine and will enhance the beauty of your furniture. 

Make sure your expensive solid wood furniture items are placed away of direct light. Light can cause irreversible colour changes to wood and pigments. 

Wood is an organic material, and therefore will react to changes in temperature and humidity. Very dry air will harm your wood – as it will shrink and dry – while too much moist in the air may cause expansion of the wood and what’s even worse, it may be the cause of some pests. In damp conditions, some timbers such as walnut and oak, can be at risk from fungal attack and wood boring insects. So both, very dry and very moist air should be avoided.

Usually, common sense is all you need to look after your nice furniture. Protect your furniture with beeswax, that you will apply once or twice a year, maintain a stable temperature and humidity scenario, avoid placing furniture near sources of heat – such as radiators – and cold air – such as air conditioning units and keep your furniture away from direct sunlight. Also, be careful when handling your items, especially chairs, as they are moved around very often, as we sit and stand up!

Stain, Stain, Go Away!

Ever gasped after a child inadvertently left a giant scratch in the surface of your dining room table? Or cringed when a well-meaning adult accidentally knocked over a drink onto your beautiful wood coffee table? Well, fear not. One of the best attributes of wood furniture is that it is simple to touch up or renew its original luster.

Small nicks and scratches can usually be disguised with the help of a store-bought scratch cover product. For larger scratches, try using a felt tip pen or shoe polish in a color closely matched to the finish of the furniture piece. Shoe polish applicator bottles filled with the stain work well for the cover-up job, as do Sharpie markers. Coloring in the scratch is easy and surprisingly effective.

Get rid of pesky water spots on your wood furniture by allowing the spots to dry completely, then rubbing real mayonnaise onto it with a soft cloth, until the spots disappear. Erase color rings left on tables by cups and glasses with a homemade mixture of cigarette ashes and cooking oil. Prep the stain first by scrubbing it with an abrasive pad or sandpaper. Then, rub the oil and ash concoction into the wood.

And what about candle wax, marring the beautiful finish of your wood dining room table? Wait until the wax cools, then apply ice. Once the wax becomes extremely hard and brittle, gently scrape it off with a plastic spatula. Finally, polish the table with a rich cream polish, and buff away any residue.

Unless you are going for the weathered picnic table look, shield all wood furniture from the drying influence of the sun. When eating a meal or entertaining guests, use a tablecloth or placemats to protect the finish of a wood table, especially when serving hot food. Place hot serving dishes atop a hot pad and candle holders over a large felt protector with a plastic top, since plastic prevents wax from running.

1) If there are any dents, scratches or other holes in the wood you will need to repair these with filler. If you there are any knots in the wood even on those sections not visible to the eye, you should seal these with a shellac based sealer. Don’t be tempted to skip this part as a knot can “run” ruining the finish you tried hard to achieve.

2) You should sand down any unit you purchase in order to get the best finish. You should not need power sanders unless the piece is very badly damaged. If this is the case, you may want to get an experienced craftsman to repair it for you.

If the surface looks fine, you can sand it using a range of abrasive papers. You start with the roughest and finish with the smoothest. Curve the paper over a putty knife to get into all the tight corners, otherwise your paint will clog here.

3) Once the sanding has been completed, vacuum the unit thoroughly to get rid of all the dust and apply a sealer to protect the wood. This is required regardless of what paint you wish to use as otherwise the wood remains porous and will absorb the paint resulting in a patchy finish.

4) You should paint the edges first, working your way into the center of the piece. Cover the entire surface and only then brush lengthways using a light overlapping paint stroke. It is always best to apply too little paint than too much.

5) Allow each coat of paint adequate time to dry before applying the next coat.

When shopping for furnishings I prefer to shop at an old fashioned store where I can see exactly what I am getting for my money. When buying wood, it is not just the type of wood you want to look at but also the individual pieces. All wood pieces have inherent flaws. That is to be expected given it is a natural product but sometimes these flaws such as knots are very noticeable. This can make it difficult for you to achieve the perfect finish and can cause cracking so are best avoided if at all possible.

When buying a wood like oak, you should try to buy quarter sawn oak and not plain. The first will last longer as plain sawn is susceptible to humidity and may crack.

If there are any holes or scratches, you will need to fill them with filler. If you intend to paint the unit it doesn’t really matter what color filler you use. But if you intend to use a varnish then you need to find purpose made wood filler in as close a match to the wood color as possible. This will result in the patching being less visible.

In the unlikely event that you have a big hole to fill, you need to use the filler in stages. You may have seen an unpainted wood furniture piece that you just couldn’t resist but perhaps it had been damaged in storage. Filling deep holes is possible and when the product has been properly finished you would never know it was there but you have to be careful. You can’t just put a lump of filler into the hole and hope for the best. This may be the quick way of doing things but it is likely to crack and ruin the overall finish.

So take it slowly, allow each layer to harden before adding any more. If you have had to use filler, you will have to sand the unit down before painting or vanishing. Always vacuum the units following sanding as otherwise you run the risk of dust particles upsetting the finish on your bare wood furniture.

The type of stain you use will depend on the wood, the finish you are trying to achieve and also your experience in staining wood furniture. For example, spirit stains dry very rapidly so it can be difficult to get even coverage. Most beginners end up with darker patches of overlapping color which is not quite the look they wanted to achieve. Water stains can only be used after the wood has first been sanded down.

Staining allows you to color the furniture piece any color you wish as you can mix and match compatible stains and dyes. You would seal an oil stain with sanding sealer before applying varnish. Don’t use a spirit stain if you intend French polishing the piece of furniture. If using water or acrylic stains you must allow them to dry properly. This means leaving the piece for at least 48 hours. Otherwise when you apply the sealant, you can get a white haze effect on the wood. Always test on an inconspicuous place first before applying the sealant to the whole unit.

Be careful if you want to stain furniture darker as the wet stain will always look darker than the dried finish. You do not want to apply more than two coats as it may become patchy. You need to try and get as good a match to the color you want to achieve as possible the first time round.

Staining wood furniture takes time and patience but the finished results will be worth it.

Hopefully, before you made the investment, you already had a clear idea what you wanted to do with the piece, but if not, then before you pick up the first tool and start to work, it’s time to plan! A little investment in time now will save you a great number of headaches down the road.

Where bare wood furniture is concerned, you essentially have three options for finishing the piece, and they are:

Leave the wood “naked”
Paint it
Stain it

Each of these options requires a bit of work on your part in order to protect your investment and maximize the beauty and functionality of the piece.

The simplest thing you can to do “finish” your new piece of bare wood furniture is to leave it in its natural state. If you choose this option, you’ll probably want to protect the wood by coating it in some type of wood protecting oil (linseed oil is commonly used on a wide variety of bare wood), but there are other products available as well. Always, always, always test first by applying a small amount of the oil you chose to an unseen corner of the wood to ensure that it won’t cause any discoloration or other reaction in the wood. Once assured of this, you can safely apply your chosen protective oil to the entire piece.

If you decide to paint your bare wood furniture, you have quite a lot to think about, aside from color selection. Type of paint, for example. If a piece is to be positioned in a bathroom, you’ll probably want to gravitate toward a glossy paint, as these stand up well to the high moisture environment. For high traffic/heavily used pieces, semi-gloss paints offer a good balance of attractiveness and durability, and if the piece is intended for a lower traffic/lower intensity environment, then flat or satin finishes will serve you well.

Now’s also the time to consider whether or not you’ll have any type of border or scrollwork on your bare wood furniture. If you’re not particularly artistically inclined, there are a number of attractive stencils you can use, readily available at home stores (Lowe’s, Home Depot), arts and craft stores (Michael’s), and sometimes at chain retail outlets (Wal-Mart, Target), so you’ve got lots of options. Of course, if you are artistically inclined or know someone who is, a hand painted border is a good way to really personalize the piece!

Finally, you might decide to stain your new piece of furniture. This is my personal favorite method of finishing pieces, even though it takes the longest, and if this is the direction you intend to go, again, you’ve got a number of decisions to make, beginning with the type of stain you’ll use. Stains come in oil-based, water-based, or gel, and while my personal preference runs to oil based, you’ll want to experiment to find out which works best for you. Obviously, you don’t want to experiment directly on your new piece of furniture, so I recommend buying an unfinished wood shelf of the same type of wood from your local home store and experiment on that. Once you make a firm selection, you can proceed with confidence and start working on your bare wood furniture direct.

Make a plan, have fun, and enjoy your new piece of bare wood furniture, no matter how you choose to finish it!
